A brilliant businessman once told me this: “Success if a frame of mind. Everything else is just a spin-off from that frame of mind.” Your mindset can make or break you, and it will determine your success or failure in your efforts to make money online.

Step 1: Find your WHY.

It might sound overly simple, but if you don’t have a strong reason why you want to engage in any business activity, your chances of success are drastically reduced. A mere desire to make money isn’t enough. Think about how you want your life to be like – ideally. For some people the driving force is simply a matter of proving themselves (to themselves), for some it is about giving their families what they deserve, and for others it is about helping ill or struggling family members. For some it is a burning desire to break through the glass ceiling. Whatever your “big why”, write it down and keep it to yourself.

Note: Your “why” should be strong enough to bring you back into focus when times get tough, or you feel like slowing down or giving up. So – think carefully about what you REALLY want, and why. It doesn’t matter what it is, and why – all that matters is that it’s true, and that it’s something that really, really matters to YOU.

Step 2: Face your fears.

Just about everyone is afraid of failing. However, before you allow your fear of failure to cloud your judgment, consider the following statement:

“Falling down isn’t failure. Failing to get up again is failure.”

Yes, you may fail to meet a goal from time to time. You may launch a project, and you may fail to make it work. However, as long as you keep learning form your mistakes and refuse to give up, the likelihood of success becomes better and better every day – regardless of your current circumstances.

Always remember this: Success is usually not because of something big you “did right” once. It’s usually the result of a multitude of small, (often) seemingly insignificant things that you kept doing right over and over, day after day, until success became inevitable.

On the other side of the coin, many people are also (even if only subconsciously) afraid of success. They are afraid of the changes it will bring, and the potential loss of friends and people they care about.

Well, here’s a news flash: It has been proven that more money doesn’t change you – it just allows you to be who you truly are. So if you are a mean person, you are likely to become more so when you make it big. If you want to help others, you will end up doing more of it when you can afford to. The only thing that changes when you have money is that you can live your life as you please.

As Tony Robbins likes to say: “Success is doing what you want, when you want, with whom you want, as much as you want.”

Step 3: Disengage from negative people.

Negativity is contagious. It can cause you to doubt yourself, it can cause you to doubt what you are doing, and it can cause you to doubt other people (in general). As an internet marketer, any one of those traits can destroy your business. Wherever you can, minimize your contact with negative people. When dealing with them is unavoidable (such as it being a family member or someone at work), try not to angage in any conversations that can affect you.

Hint: Most people won’t even comprehend what you are trying to do, so they will often try to discourage you from doing it. Don’t let them know how seriously you are taking your internet marketing. As far as they’re concerned, it’s merely a sideline income you are fiddling with to see where it leads. Once you start making good money from it, they will change their tune.

Step 4: Calculated persistence makes success inevitable.

It might sound ridiculously simple, but it’s true. For instance (very simple example): Let’s say you would write a blog post every day, share it on Twitter, and follow 100 new people on Twitter every day. Along with that, you spend just ten minutes per day doing a few retweets and commenting on tweets. If you know a little bit what you are doing, and you keep doing it every day, you will keep growing your audience on Twitter, and your blog content will continue to grow. Eventually, between Twitter and Google, your audience will become large enough to start making you money.

Fair enough, how long it will take is going to depend on many things, including the niche, the quality of your blog posts, etc, but the bottom line is that if you stick to doing what is right, and do it consistently for long enough, success becomes inevitable.

So – just keep working. Set yourself a manageable schedule, and stick to it – no matter what.

Persistence has made many more millionaires than brilliance ever did.

Step 5: Stay motivated.

Think of motivation as “cleansing yourself of negativity and doubt”. Negativity is all around you, and you are bombarded with it from all angles. Set aside a bit of time every day – even if it’s just fifteen minutes. Read, watch videos, listen to motivational audios, whatever – but just do it. You’ll be glad you did.

In conclusion:

Having the right mindset, and keeping it, will determine whether you will be successful – not only in making money online, but in anything you set your mind to for any length of time. And if this blog post seems a little over the top, consider the value of what you are aiming for…

Would you risk losing it?
